How one ticket put the brakes on red light cameras in N.J.

Newark NJ Star-Ledger -- It was the traffic ticket that put a despised multimillion-dollar state program in limbo.

En route to a mall the day after Thanksgiving last year, Janice Bollmann was flagged by a red-light camera in Edison after getting through an intersection one-fifth of a second too late.

Infuriated by the $140 ticket in a "safe corridor," the Tewksbury woman set out to learn more about the cameras sprouting like dandelions across New Jersey, levying millions of dollars in fines on thousands of drivers.

It turned out the township was also late — in inspecting the cameras.

Bollmann had no way of knowing what her routine traffic ticket would come to symbolize.

"It may be the straw that broke the camel’s back," said Steve Carrellas, New Jersey representative of the National Motorists Assoc

These cameras are one of many government scams to fleece the public. <= Good for her, agreed, although it's not the government doing the fleecing; it's some absentee opportunist parasite company in AridZona. The gummint is guilty of bending over for the kickback that company gives them at the expense of the citizenry, but let's pin the blame on the instigator first.

Good luck if you're behind one of these "slammers", it's your fault if you hit them. Red light cameras are a money grab by sleazy politicians, nothing more. Vote anyone out who's in favor of them.

I got creamed because I stopped for one and the F-150 behind me did not. It totaled my car.

The government only gets half of the fines. The other half goes to the firm that installed the cameras. Talk about a ripoff!
