Europe Could Pass Green Energy Target

Businessweek.com -- By Leigh Phillips

The European Union is to surpass its target of 20 percent consumption of energy from renewable sources by 2020, according to national forecasts submitted to the European Commission.

The EU executive found that overall, the bloc will achieve a 20.3 percent share of renewables in its energy mix.

According to a summary published on Thursday, 10 out of the EU's 27 member states are on track to exceed their national targets for renewable energy, with a further 12 set to meet their goals using domestic sources of renewable energy.

Excerpts

Europe's renewable energy directive sets an overall EU target of 20 percent and individual binding national targets. The bloc defines biofuels, biomass, wind, solar energy as well as hydro power as being renewable.

herbiepopnecker: The European states have simply taxed all energy products to death to fund all their social programs. Our state and federal governments have not learned quite how to tax us with such an iron fist, so far!

I don't care. My ancestors fled that place to keep from starving to death. I'm surprized the EU has held together this long. Let's see if Greece topples that house of cards!

So true indyjim. Isn't the precision of the EU's forecasts just amazing and incredible. They appear even more precise and certain than PD's GasPrices forecasts for price increases in the USA!

Wow, they will surpass their target by .3%. I'm amazed. Of course, they are 10 years away and everybody knows that govt. never exceeds forecast or completes anything on time.

I'm an independent who thinks if the enviornmentalists would stop protesting some of our efforts to build wind and solar fields, we could be way further along than we are. ie the wind field in Oregon, the solar fields in the California desert. Just my opinion.

MidNJ - You know "They" as opposed to "Us". The other guys. Them over there. The ones to blame, the ones who are better, or worse, can't do things right, always screwing things up, the speculators, the oil companies, the politicians, the leftists, the socialists, the bankers, them.

Who says we'll be here in the year 2020, we're not promised tomorrow.
So why speculate.
