guess if the prices go the way they are, we won't have much choice..guess we all should look into carpooling if possible.

I wish to know how many people are willing to turn off the auto air conditioning while they drive. Most of our trips are short trip of 10 to 20 minutes and a lot of time the car is not completely cool when you get to your destination. Is this a waste of energy? We do get better gasoline mileage when we do not use the air conditioning. Can we get a survey?

No, I'll still have drive round trip 50 miles a day to work and back. But We probably will not be going anywhere out of state. $$$ to much, will probably stay home this year and hope next year is better... If the Suns-a-Btiches up in Congress were for the people and not for themselves, we'd be paying one Heck of a lot less than we are. Bastardos, wish they had to live on what we make and get the medical we get and pay for the heating bills that we get...

Driving less at this point is not an option. I drive 60 miles each day for work. I won't move closer. My home is paid for and I'm not going into debt for another house to save money on gas, savings that wouldn't compare to what a house payment is. This summer I may take shorter trips, but everyone has to get away or you'll go nuts. Good weather I ride a motorcycle, but that takes premium fuel. It's still better mileage.

Thanks, buy an electric car and make my electric bill go up too! what other consequences will there be? we put ethanol in our cars and the food goes up, we start using electricity and the power grid will fail (was it 1999 on the east coast?) we cant build any more power plants the same as we cant build any more refinerys. we will have to buy or electricity from Canada (oh ya we already do that!!!)

YES!!!!!! I WILL DRIVE A LOT LESS. I drive from Oshawa to Brampton, north of the airport, on a daily basis. I have heard it all , "Why don't you move closer?", "Why don't you car pool?", "What don't you take the "GO" services?".
1. Moving is out of the question as my family lives here and the price of a home between here and there is about $200,000.00 difference. 2. Car pool , no one goes on a daily basis with sick kids, illness, personal things ect. 3. I would LOVE to use the Go service if there was one that would take me to work.I would pay almost anything to leave my car at home for my partner. Oh ya we had 2 cars but now we are down to one due to the hight price of gas!!. BUT, GO doesn't run at 4:30-5am nor does it go north of Airport RD. So add the gas and the odd drive on the 407 Toll Highway at about 0.18 per KM... because of traffic on the 401 and I spend about $200.00 to $250.00 week to go to work! YES I'm looking for a job closer to home but its not the money its the benefits I need as my partner is a recent liver transplant receiptient and we need the good coverage we have so really I have no choice like most of the people out there and I blame our government for the SKY HIGH prices! We NEED to do something a protest, anything we have to pull together or our government will sit back and laugh at us all the way to the BANK, along with the BIG GAS$$$$$$$ COMPANIES.....ching ching all the way to the bank$$$$$$

I plan on driving to E-town, Ky later this month for the weekend. Should take about 12-13gals of diesel for the trip there and back.
No, I do not plan on cutting back at all. Diesel would have to get to about $5-6 a gallon before I would start cutting back.
Pays to dirve a fuel efficeint 2003 VW Jetta TDI w/5sp! :)

I was looking trough an old 1975 Car & Driver magazine the other day, there were ads for the "NEW" '75 Datsuns, "3 models with 39 MPG" and an add for Toyota at 41 MPG. Wish I had one of those cars now. No extra driving this year, all trips over the summer are canceled.

Who can afford to go far? Heck even Walmart is 100 miles from my home town. But their prices will be going up too with the trucking prices that are going to sky rocket. The government needs to step in.

Did you really use the word "riffraff?"
Do you mean as in the "...commoners, great unwashed, minions, multitude, plebeians, proletariat, rabble, rank and file, riffraff, the common people, the herd, the many, the masses, the peons, the working class?"

I am looking into converting my VW Passat TDI (avg 35 MPG, 43 MPG highway) to run on Vegetable Oil. The $1500 kit will pay for itself in about a year with Diesel running over $4.20 US a gallon.

I have no intentions of traveling any where I dont have to go because of Gas prices when the choice is a tank of gas or groceries its not a good thing. Im really thinking about trading in the car for a motorcyle or a 10 speed bike.

Cars run on gasoline and diesel. We could be swimming in oil and have a short supply of gasoline. It is true we do not have enough refinery capacity, and we are actually importing gasoline. On the other hand, we are being robbed by the oil companies on the domestic side and on the import side. I remember when OPEC dropped prices and boosted supply in the 1980s, the oil companies capped their wells in the permian basin. Their claim was that it cost them more to pump than $15 a barrel. Funny, the same oil companies were pumping in the middle east and paying to ship it too. The solution is for the US to drill and pump domestic supplies with a cap that will ensure a fair return for the oil companies. The government needs to regulate the domestic supply because gasoline is a necessity and most of us are not wasting it now. There is no way to turn a 100 year supply into a 200 year supply by reducing demand...including doubling prices. This is not a simplistic matter of pure supply and demand or free enterprise.

Driving 1,850 miles of interstate in my 1994 Roadmaster Estate with 5.7 liter Corvette V8 engine, eight passengers, and 800 pounds of luggage, using the Climate control at 70-80 mph, I averaged 26 mpg. Only needed one car, rode comfortably, and had all the power and safety a Buick delivers. It is easy to maintain, and inexpensive to insure too. The car runs like new. Driving steady is the key. The car gets the same mileage empty and 16 mpg in town.

I try to combine my trips when I have to go somewhere. Also try to purchase gas when it is lower even if my tank is not empty. If there were better public transportation, I would consider it, but it is non existent in the Twin Cities. I have been to Europe many times and have NO PROBLEM getting around because they have a great metro and great rail in most countries. Why we are so backwards here is beyond me. Other major areas do much better, New York, Chicago to name a few. If it works there, why wouldn't it work here? I have taken the light rail to the airport, it is VERY convenient and if it went to Plymouth, I would take it to work. I hate driving on the highways, they are not built for the volume of traffic that they handle. Buses are a joke. There are too many, they are not efficient, they don't go where I need to go.

Yes, I plan on driving less. I am also a huge fan of the speed limit, coasting, and perfecting stop lights so I don't have to stop. I have started running around my neighborhood instead of driving to a park to run. Soon I start riding my bike to the park.
