Before I educated myself, I usually cruised at 8-10 mph over the speed limit. After reading that lowering my cruising speed could increase my mileage, I gave it a shot and noticed significant increases in my mileage. So, regardless of the speed limit, I usually cruise at between 60-65 mph on the highway. When encountering hills, I employ another fuel saving technique called "driving with load", in which I disengage my cruise control and maintain the same throttle pressure on the uphill climb without increasing throttle to maintain constant speed; my speed naturally drops a little on the uphill climbs, but overall fuel consumption is nearly constant.

Up here the speed limit is 110KMPH. They will not give tickets until you are over 10KMPH above the speed limit. So, I go 120. That does not matter though, because most everyone else is going faster.
As for fuel economy, I have noticed very little difference between the 2 speeds.

I set the cruise about 5 MPH over the limit. That's usually slower than most traffic is going so I figure I'm safe there. I set the cruise to keep my speed down. If I don't then my speed creeps up to the point where I might get stopped. There has been a very enthusiastic state trooper on a route I travel regularly. I'd just as soon not conribute to his county.

My cruise control won't set higher than 87 or I'd set it higher. Generally, I do 11 to 14 mph over the limit, mainly because two different law enforcement officers have told me that they're not allowed to stop anyone going less than 11 mph over the limit. For those of you who aren't in a hurry and wonder why we are? I guess you just have nothing better to do than spend hours wasting away driving? I want to get where I need to be as fast as possible. If that means driving 80+ down the interstate, so be it. I've been known to drive home when I-75 is empty around 100 mph just because I can. Driving fast is fun, and as long as you slow pokes stay outa my way, we're good.

3shrubbie brings up an interesting topic - the "culture" of certain roads/areas seems to promote or discourage speeding. It seems (anecdotally) to have little to do with the danger of the road (twisting mountain roads being an exception). For example, along I-75 in Georgia, the average speed *increases* "inside the perimeter" in Atlanta, despite the fact that most of the motorists are traveling a shorter distance. Speed enforcement is somewhat lax inside the city, but it's mostly an issue of being accustom to hurrying. I remember being quite uneasy in certain places (e.g. the "Grady Curve") when I first moved here 7 years ago, but go through there without a second thought.
In sociology class, speeding on the highway is often used as the example of an activity that is illegal but not considered deviant.
I've recently started driving a very small car that can get 30 mpg if I stay at the speed limit, but the mpg drops quickly at higher speeds. That oddly enough keeps me closer to the speed limit, even though I get better mileage @ 70 mph than my previous vehicle!

Retirement does wonders for speed control. I do notice that those in a hurry (especially during the commuting hours) just can't wait to get to where they are going. Frankly, why are they in such a hurry to get to the cemetery? Let's bring back photo radar and really get speed under control. It is interesting that the speed on 407 is generally 5-8 k's slower than that on 401. Why is that, considering that there is more open road, or is it because there are fewer just-in-time trucks?

I used to be a lead foot trying to get everywhere as fast as I could, not caring about speed limits. Now that I have time on my hands ( early retirement). I travel at my own pace around town and on the highway. On a highway trip I find I still have to use cruse control to keep my speed down to 10 mph over the limit and still have many people passing me anyway so I feel I'm safe.
